Dan Oakland is a human resource consultant and trainer, and is the founder of Alternative HRD, LLC. He has more than 30 years of experience in business operations, human resource management, management training and consulting. Through the years, Dan has worked with a variety of businesses, government entities and non-profit organizations, and has created and presented numerous training programs for managers and supervisors.
Dan is a member of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Sioux Empire Society for Human Resource Management (SESHRM), and is past president of the Great Plains Chapter of the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD).

Karen DeLange, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, HR Consultant
Karen DeLange has over fifteen years of human resource experience, including serving as an HR Manager/Generalist with a Fortune 500 company. At Citicorp in Kansas City, Karen managed a wide range of functions, including recruiting, staff relations, benefits administration, performance management, workers’ compensation, policy development, payroll liaison and salary administration. Karen has managed human resources and employee relations in the non-profit sector and has successfully built and managed her own business.

Julie Nelson, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, HR Consultant
Julie Nelson spent more than 20 years in human resource management in Lincoln, NE, primarily in the health care industry where she managed recruitment, benefits, workers’ compensation, policy administration, and employee relations. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. In Sioux Falls, Julie worked in human relations within the credit card industry and with staff recruitment in the not-for-profit sector prior to joining Alternative HRD.

Melissa Moerike, MSM-HR, HR Consultant
Melissa Moerike has more than 18 years of experience in human resources management and considerable background in strategic HR planning, HR management, talent acquisition, social media recruitment and digital marketing for business development, leadership, organizational development, employee relations, conflict resolution and safety. She has served in Director-level HR positions for notable companies in the healthcare, assisted living and the hospitality industries including Mahaska Health Partnership Hospital, and Good Samaritan Society-Sioux Falls Village during her career. Melissa has been an HR Consultant for various companies through Alternative HRD consulting service and was assigned to a startup company in 2016 where she utilized her HR experience and expertise to help open their new facility. Melissa utilized social media and E-Recruitment to strategically build the business in partnership with the CEO to select the most qualified staff for the company.
Melissa is involved with Sioux Empire SHRM workshops, conferences and has facilitated HR workshops on topics for leadership and staff development on: Investigation Process, Workplace Violence, Federal/State Laws and Regulations, First Time Supervisor Training, AA, Fair Treatment Resolution (Grievance), Leadership Development, Drama Triangle Tool-Conflict Resolution, Interviewing & Hiring Training/Workshops, Harassment, Discrimination and Diversity, and HR Strategies for Small Businesses and Startups.
She has served as a board member of the Sioux Empire SHRM chapter, served as a board member for DisruptHR-Sioux Falls in 2017, serves on an Advisory Board for Active Generations for the BRIDGES program, volunteers for United Way as an ECM and has participated in Project Connect and on the Sioux Falls Homeless Coalition. Melissa participates in public speaking events for area high schools and colleges to assist with career days and present on HR Strategies for Small Businesses, Entrepreneurs & Start-Ups. Sarah Meusburger, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, HR Consultant
Sarah Meusburger is based in the Brookings Alternative HRD office, located in the Brookings Innovation Center. She received her bachelor’s degree from SDSU and started her human resources career. Sarah had an opportunity to work with public entities for several years in leadership HR roles before starting with Alternative HRD as an HR Consultant. In addition to her consulting work, Sarah currently serves as the HR Manager for Banner Associates, Inc.
Sarah has been certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the Human Resource Certification Institute, and as a Senior Certified Professional from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM-SCP). She is currently working on earning the Certified Manager of Quality & Organizational Excellence designation and will be begin earning a master’s degree in January 2018.
As a long time Brookings resident, Sarah has stayed active in the community. She has previously served on the Brookings Area Human Resources Association (BAHRA) Board of Directors, the SD State SHRM Council and as a member of the DisruptHR Brookings Planning Committee. She is currently a member of the Business Development Committee for the Brookings Chamber and is a member of the local Crime Stoppers Board. In addition, she has presented lunch & learn seminars in the community to assist area businesses navigate the legalities involved with human resources.
In 2017, Sarah began publishing articles related to various human resources topics. She has had three articles published on SHRM’s website, as well as local and regional publications such as the Prairie Business Magazine, Sioux Falls Business Journal, and the Brookings LINK magazine.
Sarah has consistently helped organizations streamline and improve their HR and management functions, while reducing turnover and saving money. When Sarah isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Jason, and their three young children: Gabe, Ellie and Samuel.

Kayla Johnson, Human Resource Consultant
Kayla began her career handling accounting and human resource functions within the automotive industry where she discovered her passion for the HR profession.
When she moved to Sioux Falls, she managed HR functions as well as member services at Avera Power and Wellness. Most recently, Kayla handled human resources for the Harrisburg School District. Kayla has great instincts for people and business, and she can easily flow from counseling client staff members on benefit issues to coaching supervisors on performance best practices to meeting with executives and developing effective HR that positively impacts the bottom line.
She specializes in working with family business clients for Alternative HRD.

Holly Hansen, HR Specialist/Office Manager
Holly Hansen has more than 15 years of human resource experience with considerable focus on the health care industry. She has worked for community hospitals, clinics and large health care systems including multiple facilities within the Avera network. Holly graduated from the University of South Dakota where she earned her degree in Business Management with an emphasis in Marketing.
Holly has a particular interest and talent for workforce development and recruiting. For more than a decade she attracted and retrained hundreds of employees to the Sioux Falls community and region. Holly has been recognized for building relationships with top medical talent and with other professionals within her organizations. She is highly experienced in communicating HR benefit plans and negotiating offers of employment, all while delivering outstanding customer satisfaction.
